 INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
We are pleased to present the completely revised
and updated fifth edition of the
Standard Catalog of
World Coins 1701-1800
. This edition not only con-
tains nearly five years of market adjustments, it pro-
vides expanded descriptions, pricing in up to five
grades of preservation and hundreds of new images.
And market adjustments is certainly where things
have been quite active. Gold and silver bullion
prices are at new all-time highs and the values rep-
resented in this volume certainly have taken into
account those new levels.
This volume contains a wealth of data for the Ger-
man States and the Holy Roman Empire, France,
Great Britain, Spain, Russia and Mexico as well as
additions to many other countries throughout the
book. Concise listings of minors and fractional
issues, which have generally been available to col-
lectors and dealers only in long out-of-print, difficult
to locate, non-English references, are presented
here in an easy-to-use format, making this catalog
an excellent one-stop resource.
In keeping with the traditions that have been held
in focus with the
Standard Catalog of World Coins
from the very first edition, this volume is organized
in a user-friendly format. An alphabetical sort order
has been incorporated for countries of issue. An
effort has been made to indicate each change in
political structure or issuing authority and its associ-
ated coinage. The listings are generally arranged by
denomination, which now appear with each listing.
Coins are heavily illustrated by basic types, to the
point that there is a virtual certainty you will find a
photo match to the designs, or at least a clear word
description of any 18th century coins that may come
into your possession. To facilitate the easy identifi-
cation and attribution of coins of the era, this volume
features numerous helpful mint and privy mark
charts in the introductions.
The
Standard Catalog of World Coins
1701-1800
5th Edition is the result of nearly 40 years of
research by more than 200 respected numismatic
experts around the world. True to the stated objec-
tive of the original
Standard Catalog of World Coins
(published in 1971), this edition augments the cur-
rent family of five century reference catalogs, which
conveniently replace a shelf of often-elusive special-
ized books, many of which are obscure and when
found, very expensive.
The updated fifth edition provided an opportunity
for focus on some specific areas long in need of
heavy revision, including pricing throughout. More
detail and improved descriptions are found in every
country. The result is a nearly 1,500-page book

complete with detailed information no collector or
dealer can do without.
Does this mean this
Standard Catalog of World
Coins 1701-1800
volume represents unquestioned
completeness of coverage for the era? No.
Is it a definitive work, on the basis of authoritative-
ness and exhaustiveness? Yes.
Is it the ultimate word on the subject that will ever
be published? We certainly hope not.
What this is, in effect, is a living and breathing
book. This is a reference that will grow and benefit
your future interests, in the presentation of succes-
sor editions, to the measure of what you, the user,
contribute to make it something more than it pres-
ently is. Toward that end, you are invited — make
that encouraged — to point out errors and omis-
sions and challenge any content you have reason to
question. Perhaps together we can advance this
massive base of knowledge.
Should you have new listing information or a coin
for possible illustration consideration, we would wel-
come correspondence to
. Coins for illustration should be scanned at
100 percent size, 300 dpi and sent as a jpeg with
the mm size of the coin under consideration, as well
as the catalog number reference and the country of
origin.
We hope you find this new edition meets your col-
lecting needs. Enjoy your hobby.
